Abstract
Description
This course is designed to introduce students to qualitative approaches relevant to the study of media and communication. We will focus on a variety of philosophical and conceptual approaches, as well as practical methodologies and tools that will help students conduct qualitative scholarly research in their area of interest. The major methods of study will include text-based analyses, visual methods, ethnography/participant observation, historical analysis, interviews, and approaches to digital media. In addition to writings on epistemological and ethical issues, we will also critically examine the application of qualitative methods by way of recent studies of media audiences, industries, and texts.
