Abstract
Research Question: How do service industry employees (e.g., front-line customer-facing roles, platform-mediated interactions) experience and negotiate emotional labor (e.g., surface and deep acting) within hospitality and service contexts such as hotels, restaurants, airlines, theme parks, casinos, and gig work settings and what theoretical insights and methodological pathways can inform a future research agenda aimed at sustainable employee well-being (e.g., burnout, job satisfaction, psychological strain)?
Librarians Karen Kohn and Becca Fülöp developed detailed search strategies for each database. The librarians (KK and RF) developed the search for APA PsycInfo and translated (KK) the search for every database searched. The APA PsycInfo search strategy was reviewed by the research team to check for accuracy and term relevancy. All final searches were peer-reviewed by another librarian (Jacob Brintzenhoff) following the Peer Review of Electronic Search Strategies (PRESS checklist). The search was limited by date from 1993 to 2025. Searches were also filtered to include academic journal articles and books in English.
Description
The databases included in this search are APA PsycInfo (EBSCO), Web of Science (Clarivate), Business Source Complete (EBSCO), ABI/Inform Complete (ProQuest), Hospitality & Tourism Index (EBSCO), and ProQuest Social Science Premium Collection, using a combination of keywords and subject headings. All final searches were performed on September 30, 2025 by the librarians and were fully reported on September 30, 2025.
A summary of the search results
APA PsycInfo (EBSCO): 254 results
Web of Science (Clarivate): 525 results
Business Source Complete (EBSCO): 165 results
ABI/Inform Complete (ProQuest): 253 results
Hospitality & Tourism Index (EBSCO): 84 results
ProQuest Social Science Premium Collection: 199 results
The search resulted in 1,480 studies. 686 duplicate studies were found and omitted by the librarian [KK] using EndNote 20 and following the Bramer et al. duplicate identification strategy. This resulted in 794 records to screen from databases.
