Abstract
The U.S. entertainment business has historically been characterized by racial injustice and structural exclusion, with African Americans disproportionately experiencing both overt and subtle racial discrimination. This dissertation explores the intricate and often overlooked intersections of race, labor, and creativity within the television and film sectors, specifically those that lie beyond the mainstream dominance of Hollywood. Using Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Cultural Studies, particularly within the fields of production and media industry studies, this ethnographic work highlights the lived experiences, daily routines, and racial perspectives of African Americans working in mainstream and alternative spaces. It investigates Black entertainment and media production within the contemporary social context, specifically Atlanta’s prominence in the television and film world following the establishment of Tyler Perry Studios and the effects of technological advancement on African Americans in the industry.
