Abstract
My visual perenigration is inspired by the powerful voice of Ubah Cristina Ali Farah the author of the book Il Comandante del fiume (2014) where the Tiber, as much as in my work, is not merely a geographical feature—it is a symbolic and narrative force that reflects the complexities of identity, belonging, and memory in postcolonial Italy. The river is also more than a setting—it is a metaphor, a social space, and a narrative device. It reflects the condition of postcolonial subjects in Italy, especially those like Yabar who are caught between cultures and histories. Through its dual role as a site of beauty and decay, inclusion and exclusion, the river mirrors the complexities of identity in a multicultural society. I imagined the protagonist, Yabar, later on in his life, by then, a seasoned sailor of a society that persistently keep labelling as an outsider. Despite his local upbringing, he is marked by the legacy of migration and colonial histories. I read the Tiber, with its simultaneous beauty and decay, as a metaphor for his liminal status; a space where identities are negotiated, where past and present collide, and where new forms of belonging can emerge.
