Abstract
Multiple studies have been conducted on the relationship between trauma, intergenerational violence, and personality disorders. The relationship between the three is rife with misinformation and assumptions from difficulty treating patients diagnosed with Cluster B personality disorders. It is often assumed that victims of domestic violence, particularly in childhood, have a greater tendency to become abusers later in life, with a higher diagnosis rate of Cluster B personality disorders contributing to an unstable domestic environment as adults. This paper offers an exploration of the impact of intergenerational trauma and violence. Notably, its relationship to the development of Cluster B personality disorders and their contribution to cyclical patterns of violent and abusive behavior within the domestic environment. Within the context of intergenerational trauma, this paper will explore interventional and preventative methods by which victims and perpetrators of trauma and violence can find relief and escape within domestic violence situations. Additionally, this paper will reference the theories regarding the abused becoming abusers, the cycle of abuse, and the impact of abuse and childhood domestic violence on the developing brain and its ability to retain memory as well as attempting to dispel many of the myths surrounding personality disorders and their relationship to pipelines of continual abuse.
