Abstract
This dissertation examines the dynamics of land use and land cover change in the Altillanura region of Eastern Colombia, focusing on the role of commodity agriculture as a regional development strategy between 2003 and 2021. Drawing on a land systems science perspective and inspired by frontier studies, it integrates remote sensing-based approaches to characterize trajectories of land cover change with theoretical foundations from political ecology and economics. The research documents agricultural transformation and contested territorialization, advancing methods for change characterization that link spatial patterns to institutional settings, policy drivers, and underlying mechanisms of land control. It highlights how ecological conditions, infrastructure, and diverse land control strategies shape commodity frontiers, contributing to debates on frontier governance, sustainability, and land system science.
