Abstract
Students with disabilities face challenges in receiving, implementing, and utilizing AT accommodations in the classroom due to faculty attitudes, policies, and stigma. Further barriers exist for AT users as there is a lack of available resources, awareness, training, and user compatibility. The purpose of this capstone project is to explore the current assistive technology (AT) knowledge and experiences of students and faculty to create a social media campaign educating the Temple University community and advocating for the access of AT accommodations in the classroom. I developed and distributed surveys to 740 students and 740 faculty following faculty and site mentor approval. I designed the structure of these surveys to capture respondent’s knowledge and comfortability with AT related concepts as well as a chance to share their personal experiences with AT accommodations in the classroom. By conducting these surveys, the DRS AT team was able to get a better sense of what is going well and how they can improve. Responses from the surveys varied but common themes addressed include lack of awareness for AT options on campus, students unsure of what to do when challenged by faculty, and faculty wanting to be more inclusive in the classroom but may not have the resources to do so which aligns with current research. As a result, the social media posts I created for the campaign have the capacity to address these knowledge gaps while reaching a large audience through a public social media account. Although the social media campaign has only begun, it will be encouraged to continue the campaign following the capstone experience as it has the potential to positively impact DRS services.
