Abstract
In some menstruating women, there exists a disorder that occurs during the luteal phase of the cycle called Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). This disorder includes symptoms that cause cognitive, physical, and emotional struggles to the individual. The cause of this disorder is unknown, though the deficiency in neurosteroids is suspected to be a factor. Current treatments for PMDD are either antidepressants or oral contraceptives, which prove effective for some, but not for all. Nonetheless, these solutions fail when attempting to address the actual cause of PMDD, but simply manage the symptoms associated with the disorder. In response to these flaws, this paper aims to propose a solution that has the capability to help mitigate PMDD symptoms by targeting the cause: the brain. By developing a medicine based on the neurosteroid allopregnanolone, a future in which patients don’t have to resort to simply managing symptoms can be a foreseeable possibility. The goal of this paper is not to claim a perfect solution to PMDD, but rather to shift the current state of solving the problem into something that is based more on the disorder itself. After building onto previously done research and exploring a wide range of possibilities, the use of allopregnanolone analogs as a treatment for PMDD appears to be the greatest viable option and should be the course of action being taken when developing a treatment.
