Abstract
Due to immunosuppression and other factors, patients post-transplant at are at a higher risk than other patients for acquiring nosocomial infections. Many studies have been done researching the techniques and importance of healthcare worker hand hygiene, however patient hand hygiene is an equally important factor in preventing infections. In many lung transplant units, lung transplant recipients are on a journey to healing, however they may be bed or chair-bound and unable to reach the bathroom to perform hand hygiene. We wanted to examine the effects of providing personal hand sanitizer for patients and encouraging patients to regularly wash or sanitize their hands before meals and after using the bathroom on the rates hospital-acquired infections.
