Abstract
To identify studies to include or consider for this scoping review, the review team worked with a librarian (RF) to develop detailed search strategies for each database. The PRISMA-ScR extension was followed for search reporting. The librarian (RF) developed the search for PubMed (NLM) and translated the search for every database searched. The PubMed search strategy was reviewed by the research team to check for accuracy and term relevancy. All final searches were peer-reviewed by another librarian (SB) following the Peer Review of Electronic Search Strategies (PRESS checklist).
Description
To identify studies to include or consider for this scoping review, the review team worked with a librarian (RF) to develop detailed search strategies for each database. The PRISMA-ScR extension was followed for search reporting. The librarian (RF) developed the search for PubMed (NLM) and translated the search for every database searched. The PubMed search strategy was reviewed by the research team to check for accuracy and term relevancy. All final searches were peer-reviewed by another librarian (SB) following the Peer Review of Electronic Search Strategies (PRESS checklist).
The databases included in this search are: PubMed (NLM), CINAHL (EbscoHost), Embase (Elsevier), Web of Science Core Collection (Clarivate Analytics), Public Health Database (ProQuest), Nursing & Allied Health (ProQuest), Research Library: Health & Medicine (ProQuest), and Dissertations & Theses Global (ProQuest). All were searched using a combination of keywords and subject headings (when available). A grey literature search included Trip Pro (tripdatabase.com) and Europe PMC (europepmc.org). All final searches were performed on December 16, 2025 by the librarian and were fully reported on December 17. The full search strategies as reported by the librarian are provided in Appendix(___). They are also archived at [DOI].
A summary of the search results:
PubMed (NLM) from 1809 to 12/16/2025 (282 results)
CINAHL (EbscoHost) from 1976 to 12/16/2025 (537 results)
Embase (Elsevier) from 1974 to 12/16/2025 (818 results)
Web of Science Core Collection (Clarivate Analytics) from 1900 to 12/16/2025 (952 results)
ProQuest Public Health from 1934 to 12/16/2025 (583 results)
ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Database from 1857 to 12/16/2025 (286 results)
ProQuest Research Library: Health & Medicine from 1863 to 12/16/2025 (194 results)
ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global from 1637 to 12/16/2025 (93 results)
TRIP Pro from 1867 to 12/16/2025 (2,181 results)
Europe PMC from 1781 To 12/16/2025 (to be screened from the website)
The search resulted in 5,926 studies. 1,251 duplicate studies were found and omitted by the librarian [RF] using EndNote 20 [and following the Bramer deduplication method. This resulted in 4,675 records to screen from databases or registers. The librarian also gave the team a search strategy for Europe PMC and instructed them to screen the results from the website, as exporting was not available at the time. Studies were screened by title and abstract by two blinded and independent reviewers. If a tiebreaker was needed, a third reviewer was called in. This process was repeated for full text article screening and article selection.
