Abstract
Within the hospital settings, controlling patients’ pain and anxiety levels is difficult to manage. With regards to pain management, there continues to be an ongoing concern related to managing pain for some patients. Healthcare workers work tirelessly trying to identify a pain regimen to help relieve acute and/or chronic pain amongst their patients. While pain medications such as opioids continue to have a high risk for dependency, addiction and/or overdose, it is imperative that alternatives for pain relief which are safe to practice are implemented within the hospital setting. In addition, it has been said that millions of people suffer from anxiety, whether the severity is mild, moderate, or severe. This level of anxiety only intensifies once a patient is admitted to the hospital due to the fear of the unknown and loss of control making this another important, yet difficult concern to manage. Alternative ways to manage pain and anxiety have been existent for some time, but the use of essential oils has become a popular choice. The purpose of this literature review was to investigate the effects of essential oils with the management of patient’s pain and anxiety. There were several studies reviewed, and for all studies, the findings showed the positive benefits of essential oils with the reduction of anxiety and pain in patients. This literature review validates the importance of using alternative treatments to manage pain and anxiety by providing support for the use of essential oils to reduce patients’ pain and anxiety, and includes substantial recommendations for implementing its use.
