Abstract
“Valence” refers to the pleasantness of an experience. Experiences that are pleasant have positive valence, whereas experiences that are unpleasant have negative valence. Many philosophers explain the phenomenal character of valence by appealing to content. On these content-based views, valence is uniform—it has the same content across all affective states. Drawing on integrative theories of emotion, I suggest that valence is non-uniform—there are different kinds of valence. First, I respond to three arguments in favor of valence uniformity. Thereafter, I provide an argument for my view from the literature on “complex emotions.”
