Abstract
There is an increase in the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea(OSA). Due to the lingering effects of anesthesia and analgesics, an underlying diagnosis of OSA increases the risk of complications. These complications include but are not limited to: hypoxia, reintubation, unplanned transfer to intensive care unit (ICU), and cardiac ischemia. Use of the STOP-Bang questionnaire is shown to be a valid screening tool for patients who may have undiagnosed OSA. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is an effective means of treating OSA pre- and postoperatively. Nursing interventions for preventing complications of OSA include patient positioning, careful administration of opioids, patient and family education, nonpharmacological pain management, etc. Implementation of a preoperative screening tool followed by an evidenced based checklist may be helpful for those who have undiagnosed OSA. More research is needed to increase evidence-based knowledge of a protocol for postoperative patients with OSA.
