Abstract
The purpose of this research was to determine whether a relationship exists between using name badges with call bell-cancelling sensors and patient satisfaction. The authors’ Medical Surgical units allowed for them to see and experience countless patients using call bells and survey responses regarding satisfaction, based on response times. They were able to research nurses’ response time to call bells, in order to help determine the length of time that each patient waits, which is directly correlated to patient satisfaction. The authors noted that patients may claim that no staff members have entered the patient’s rooms. With the introduction of call bell-cancelling sensors onto staff name badges, not only will that increase patient satisfaction, but it would provide documentation of which staff members entered the patients’ rooms. This would give a more accurate representation of the time that it takes a staff member to address the patient’s concerns. A review of literature revealed that using these types of call bell-cancelling sensors, patient satisfaction increased and patient wait times decreased. This technology is a safe, non-invasive, non pharmacological, and inexpensive nursing intervention that can be integrated into care of the Medical Surgical patient.
