Abstract
This mixed methods study reports levels of work satisfaction of music therapistsworking in the United States. A total of 1,154 board-certified music therapists com-pleted a 28-question survey f ocused on their workplace, work, and professional de-velopment experiences, along with their levels of stress, burnout, and happiness. Two open-ended questions asked r espondents to r eflect on their identities as musictherapists. Composite work satisfaction scores were subsequently divided into quar-tiles, characterizing high, moderate, and low work satisfaction groups. Music thera-pists reporting high work satisfaction indicated significantly higher levels of positiveagreement with questions regarding work satisfaction than did music therapists re-porting moderate or low work satisfaction. Work satisfaction was a lso significantlyassociated with stress, burnout, and happiness. The profiles of music therapists re-porting high, moderate, and low work satisfaction were further connected t o theiridentities as music therapists, illuminating the characteristics of music therapistswho are thriving, those who are moderately s atisfied at work, and those who arestruggling. These profiles provide insights into the occupational wellbeing of the pro-fession.
