Abstract
The purpose of this evidence based project was to determine the benefits of early mobilization of the adult intensive care patient. Early mobilization is considered to be initiated within the first two days of admission to the intensive care unit. The current standards and protocols for early mobilization are not strongly enforced considering the known deleterious effects of bed rest on patient’s respiratory function, musculoskeletal strength, and overall well-being. Studies were analyzed to determine what effects the enforcement of early mobilization has on the ICU patient’s overall health. Outcomes which were analyzed in addition to mental and physical health include the length of stay in the hospital, readmission rates, and functional status of the patient at discharge. Most of the studies also looked into the barriers and adverse effects of engaging the ICU patient in early mobilization. A number of these studies proved to yield positive patient outcomes and low adverse effects.
