Abstract
The use of intravenous (IV) catheters has become a standard of hospital care with nearly 70% of patients requiring IV access (Anderson, 2016). Successful IV insertion is important to help decrease patient anxiety and increase trust between the patient and nurse (Carr, 2015). The purpose of this evidenced based literature review was to examine and compare the tools used for IV insertion. Neither VeinViewer, nor AccuVein, showed statistically significant improvement over traditional methods (Aulagnier et al., 2014) (Ramer et al., 2015). Experienced nurses did show a significant decrease in IV insertion attempts (Carr, 2015). Our recommendation is for novice nurses to pursue opportunities inserting IVs in order to gain experience. Evidence shows that IV insertion success rates increases with experience.
